Sri Lanka Hit by Major Injury Blow

Sri Lanka’s preparations for the Tri-Nation T20 series against Pakistan and Zimbabwe have been thrown into disarray following the injury-enforced withdrawal of star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga. The SLC confirmed that Hasaranga will miss the tournament after failing to recover from a hamstring strain sustained during the ongoing ODI series.

Hasaranga’s absence represents a significant setback for Sri Lanka. Over the past few years, he has been an integral figure in both T20 and ODI formats, known for his explosive batting, wicket-taking leg-spin, and agile fielding. The team’s management now faces the daunting task of reconfiguring strategies to cover the void left by his departure.

The selectors have responded quickly by calling up promising young leg-spinner Vijaykanth Viyaskanth. At just 21, Viyaskanth has been making waves in domestic cricket and is currently playing for Sri Lanka ‘A’ in the Asia Cup Rising Star tournament in Qatar. His selection is both a vote of confidence and a test of his ability to perform on the international stage.

Viyaskanth first came to prominence in December 2020 during the Lanka Premier League, featuring for the Jaffna Stallions at the age of 18 years and 364 days. His early performances highlighted his potential, and he has since developed into one of Sri Lanka’s most consistent young spinners. In the 2025 LPL, he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker, demonstrating his ability to thrive under pressure. Across 59 T20 matches, Viyaskanth has taken 67 wickets at an average of 20.98, reflecting both skill and consistency.

In addition to Hasaranga’s withdrawal, Sri Lanka will also be missing Charith Asalanka and Asitha Fernando due to illness. Leadership responsibilities have now fallen to Dasun Shanaka, who will captain the side in Asalanka’s absence. Spin-bowling all-rounder Pavan Rathnayake has also been drafted in to replace Fernando. These reshuffles will require players to adapt quickly, testing the depth and resilience of the squad.

The Tri-Nation T20 series has already begun, with Pakistan claiming a five-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the opening fixture.
