Senior Bangladesh cricketers Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad, unsold in the initial round of the BPL auction, finally secured teams during the second phase of bidding. Listed in the ‘B’ category, both players would have dropped to ‘C’ if unsold again, as per league rules.
Rangpur Riders purchased Mahmudullah for a base price of 3.5 million BDT, while Rajshahi Warriors picked Mushfiqur. In a demonstration of respect for the players’ contribution to Bangladeshi cricket, both franchises retained them at their original ‘B’ category value. Rangpur Riders’ owner Ishtiaq Sadek recommended to the BPL Governing Council that the category demotion be waived. The Governing Council approved the suggestion, reflecting the high regard in which the two cricketers are held.
Mahmudullah, despite retiring from international cricket, has maintained excellent form in domestic competitions and was a key player in Fortune Barishal’s championship-winning campaign last season. Mushfiqur remains a central figure in the Bangladesh Test squad and continues to perform consistently at the domestic level.
From a strategic perspective, acquiring experienced players like Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah strengthens team composition. Their presence provides mentorship to younger players, stabilises batting line-ups, and adds tactical depth to both Rajshahi and Rangpur. The move signals that franchises value a blend of experience and emerging talent, ensuring both competitive performance and team development in the BPL.
By retaining these players at the ‘B’ category base price, the franchises have not only honoured their contributions but also made a clear statement about prioritising skill, experience, and leadership in the league structure.
