Salman Agha Sets New Record for Most International Matches

Pakistan’s cricket calendar for the year has been exceptionally demanding, but no player has shouldered the workload more completely than T20 captain Salman Agha. With Pakistan featuring in 54 international fixtures this year—and Salman appearing in every single one—he now holds the world record for the most international matches played by an individual cricketer in a single calendar year.

The record was sealed during Pakistan’s recent tri-nation T20 encounter against Zimbabwe. By simply stepping onto the field, Salman surpassed the long-standing tally of 53 matches jointly held by three icons: India’s Rahul Dravid and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and Pakistan’s own Mohammad Yousuf.

Salman’s appearances span all three formats:
32 T20 internationals
17 One-Day Internationals
5 Test matches

Only 22 cricketers in history have managed to play 50 or more international matches in a single year. The first to reach this milestone was Sachin Tendulkar in 1997, before Rahul Dravid overtook that figure in 1999 during India’s relentlessly busy season.

While Salman has now broken the global individual record, Pakistan as a team are also on the brink of surpassing a national landmark. Should they take the field on Thursday against Sri Lanka, they will exceed their own previous yearly high of 54 internationals, achieved this year and previously in 2013.

Despite Salman’s historic achievement, the overall record for most team appearances in a calendar year still belongs to India, who played an extraordinary 71 international matches in 2022—a figure unlikely to be challenged soon.
