Rangpur Riders Surprise Everyone by Picking Italian Cricketer Emilio Gay

The BPL auction may have lacked excitement for most franchises, but Rangpur Riders created a buzz by signing Italy’s left-handed opener Emilio Gay for $10,000. Interestingly, the deal reportedly happened at the player’s own request. Amid a sea of well-known international cricketers, Rangpur’s choice raises eyebrows: why an Italian cricketer with limited international experience?

Emilio’s international record may be modest—seven matches for Italy, including four ODIs and three T20s—but his performances have been impressive. In November last year, he scored fifty in all four ODIs he played for Italy. In T20s, his debut came in July, and he scored 50 in just his second match against Scotland. All three T20 appearances were part of the ICC T20 World Cup Europe Regional Finals, giving him exposure to competitive cricket.

Yet, Emilio is fundamentally an English cricketer. Born in Bedford, England, to an Italian mother and Grenadian father, he plays county cricket regularly. In first-class cricket, he has amassed 4,150 runs in 67 matches at an average of 37.38, including ten centuries. His highest score is a remarkable 261. Currently, he represents Durham in English domestic cricket.

Emilio’s decision to play for Italy is strategic. He told Sky Sports last year, “I want to excel in white-ball cricket as well as red-ball. Playing for Italy provides that opportunity.” English regulations prevent anyone who has represented a full-member nation other than England from playing for England, but associate-member nations like Italy are exempt, making this a pragmatic choice for Emilio.

Rangpur Riders’ acquisition could prove to be a masterstroke. Emilio brings technical solidity, experience, and the ability to perform under pressure. While he may not yet have the global recognition of other foreign recruits, his record in both red-ball and white-ball cricket suggests that he can make a significant impact in the BPL.

In a tournament where strategic foreign signings can change fortunes, Emilio Gay might just be the surprise package Rangpur needs to make a strong run.
