Punjab Kings are set to embark on a major revamp ahead of the 2026 IPL season, and the first casualty of this shake-up is Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell. The reigning runners-up have confirmed that the flamboyant player will not feature in the squad for the upcoming edition.
Maxwell, a prolific T20 player internationally, faced a torrid time in the 2025 IPL. He scored just 48 runs in six innings, with his last four outings yielding single-digit scores. While he managed to take four wickets, the impact was far from convincing. His campaign was cut short after seven matches due to a finger injury, prompting the franchise to reconsider his role in the squad.
In Maxwell’s place, Punjab Kings have invested in Mitchell Wayne, an explosive young Australian who lit up the Big Bash League with two centuries and 452 runs at a strike rate of 203.60. Although Wayne endured a forgettable IPL debut, the franchise appears willing to back his potential over immediate returns.
Maxwell’s departure marks the end of his third stint with Punjab Kings, having previously played for the team between 2014–2017 and in 2021. He was purchased for INR 4.20 crore last season, reflecting the franchise’s confidence in his abilities.
Alongside Maxwell, the Kings are also releasing several other players, including Aaron Hardie, Kyle Jamieson, Kuldeep Sen, Praveen Dubey, and Vishnu Vinod. This move signals a comprehensive rebuilding strategy aimed at improving squad balance and performance consistency.
