Pakistan will launch their official preparation campaign for the 2026 T20 World Cup with a three-match T20I series in Sri Lanka in January 2026. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that Dambulla will host all the fixtures, scheduled for January 7, 9, and 11. This tour marks Pakistan’s first white-ball assignment of the new year and is expected to be a crucial part of their lead-up to the global event.
The PCB stated that the tour will serve as an ideal platform for the team to sharpen skills, fine-tune fielding strategies, and build chemistry under pressure. Since Pakistan’s World Cup matches will all be hosted in Sri Lanka, the opportunity to understand local conditions ahead of time is expected to provide a competitive advantage.
Pakistan’s T20 workload since mid-2025 has been intense. In the months following the Pakistan Super League, the team participated in numerous high-level assignments: bilateral series home and away against Bangladesh, a series in the West Indies, two tri-series involving multiple international teams, the Asia Cup, and a home series against South Africa. These tours reflect the PCB’s strong focus on T20 development, with the aim of establishing one of the most battle-tested squads ahead of the World Cup.
Although Pakistan managed to win most of their T20I engagements, they did face setbacks — including a series loss in Bangladesh and a painful defeat in the Asia Cup final against India. These results highlighted areas requiring improvement, especially middle-order consistency and death bowling under pressure.
Sri Lanka, who will host the January series, have recently concluded a tour of Pakistan themselves. Their visit involved three ODIs and a tri-series with Zimbabwe. Given the recent encounters between the two nations, the upcoming matches promise competitive cricket and tactical experimentation from both sides.
Pakistan’s responsibilities in January will not end with the Sri Lanka tour. Later that month, they will host Australia for a three-match T20I series on home soil. This will give selectors one final opportunity to evaluate fringe players, test alternate bowling combinations, and finalise their World Cup lineup.
In the 2026 T20 World Cup, Pakistan find themselves in Group A alongside India, Namibia, Netherlands, and the United States. All of their group-stage fixtures will take place in Colombo. The Pakistan–India match in particular is set to be one of the most-watched encounters of the tournament.
With the countdown to the World Cup already underway, Pakistan’s management is confident that these successive series — Sri Lanka away and Australia at home — will provide the ideal preparation for a deep run in the tournament. Their objectives include improving stability in the top order, refining bowling plans, and ensuring key players maintain peak fitness.
The Sri Lanka tour marks the beginning of this high-intensity buildup, positioning Pakistan for a promising start to their World Cup campaign.
