Bangladesh cricket followers have been given welcome reassurance following the conclusion of the Indian Premier League auction, as the Bangladesh Cricket Board has formally confirmed that left-arm pace star Mustafizur Rahman will be permitted to participate in the entire IPL season. The announcement brings clarity after days of speculation regarding his availability, while also reinforcing the board’s long-standing principle that national commitments must remain paramount, even amid the growing demands of franchise cricket.
Mustafizur, one of Bangladesh’s most accomplished and tactically intelligent fast bowlers, was one of the headline names at the auction. Kolkata Knight Riders secured his services for a remarkable INR 9.20 crore, a record sum for a Bangladeshi cricketer in the IPL. The figure reflects not only his proven skill set but also his reputation as a bowler capable of delivering under pressure, particularly in high-stakes T20 contests. His subtle variations, deceptive cutters and calm temperament at the death have made him a sought-after figure across global leagues.
In the immediate aftermath of the auction, uncertainty surrounded whether Mustafizur would be granted a full no-objection certificate, given Bangladesh’s busy international calendar and the board’s cautious approach to releasing players in previous seasons. The BCB’s confirmation has now settled those concerns, making it clear that he will be available throughout the tournament, subject to one important condition tied to international duty.
Under the terms of the clearance, Mustafizur will be required to return to Bangladesh during the IPL to take part in a three-match One Day International series against New Zealand. During that window, he will temporarily step away from franchise duties to represent the national side. BCB director Nazmul Abedin Fahim explained that the series is expected to span approximately eight days and that Mustafizur’s inclusion is considered crucial, particularly against an opposition of New Zealand’s calibre.
Earlier, BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul had outlined the board’s broader policy regarding player releases, noting that decisions on NOCs are guided by the cricket operations department. He emphasised that the national team’s requirements, the timing of international fixtures, and the strategic importance of individual players are carefully weighed before any approval is granted.
The Bangladesh–New Zealand ODI series is likely to take place in March or April, although official dates have yet to be announced. This period coincides with the IPL, which is scheduled to run from 26 March to 31 May. Despite the overlap, Mustafizur is expected to miss only a small portion of the competition and remain available for the majority of Kolkata Knight Riders’ matches.
Cricket analysts have largely praised the BCB’s decision, describing it as a balanced and pragmatic compromise. It ensures Bangladesh retain one of their most reliable bowlers for an important international assignment, while also allowing Mustafizur to showcase his talents on the world’s most prominent T20 stage. Supporters will now hope that he can repay KKR’s faith with decisive performances, while continuing to serve Bangladesh with consistency, professionalism and distinction.
