Kolkata Faces Backlash Over Cameron Green’s Bowling Absence

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are under intense scrutiny after their record signing, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, did not bowl in the franchise’s opening Indian Premier League (IPL) match. Purchased for a staggering ₹25.20 crore, Green became the most expensive overseas player in IPL history. However, questions about why the team failed to utilise his bowling have dominated discussions following KKR’s loss to Mumbai Indians (MI).

KKR posted a competitive 220-run total at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, yet it proved insufficient. Chasing the target, Mumbai secured a six-wicket victory with five balls to spare, led by the formidable Hardik Pandya. The defeat exposed KKR’s vulnerability in the pace-bowling department, a problem compounded by Green not bowling.

Green has recently returned from a long injury layoff, and Cricket Australia (CA) has restricted his bowling as a precaution. Even in the most recent Ashes series, he bowled sparingly, and his overs in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup were similarly limited. Ahead of the IPL, speculation had already circulated that Australia would prevent him from bowling in the tournament.

A CA spokesperson clarified, “Cameron has recovered from his back injury but will need approximately 10–12 more days before he can resume a full bowling workload in India. Kolkata has been fully briefed and is aware of the situation.”

KKR opener Ajinkya Rahane also addressed the issue after the Mumbai match: “Once Green begins bowling, our combinations may shift. Currently, we need to assess who can bowl. We performed well with the bat, but balance in bowling is crucial. We hope he starts bowling soon, and the team’s combinations will settle.” When pressed on why Green did not bowl, Rahane deferred to Cricket Australia.

Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu criticised CA’s approach. Speaking on ESPN Cricinfo, he remarked, “It is unreasonable to dictate what a player can or cannot do. If someone comes to a tournament, they should be allowed to perform fully. The player should decide based on their capabilities.”

Following Rayudu’s comments, former India spinner Piyush Chawla questioned the precedent: “If an all-rounder in the Big Bash League cannot bat or bowl in certain matches, would they be selected in the XI? Unlikely. So why apply such restrictions here? It’s simple—leave the decision to the professional cricketer.”
