Joe Burns Guides Italy but Misses T20 World Cup

Joe Burns’ story is one of heritage, heartbreak, and historic achievement. An Australian by birth, a Test cricketer by profession, and Italian by ancestry, Burns reshaped the trajectory of Italian cricket in little more than a year. Yet, in a cruel twist befitting the game’s unpredictability, the very man who captained Italy to their first-ever ICC global tournament will not feature at the forthcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Burns, who represented Australia in 23 Tests, six One-Day Internationals, and eight T20 Internationals, last wore the Baggy Green in 2020. Though his international career stalled thereafter, his connection to the game never waned. Instead, Burns felt a pull towards his ancestral roots — a journey that would ultimately redefine Italian cricket.

Returning to Italy under eligibility through descent, Burns embraced an ambitious challenge: leading an emerging cricket nation onto the world stage. As captain, he guided Italy through the European sub-regional and regional qualifiers for the 2026 T20 World Cup pathway, playing a decisive role in securing Italy’s historic qualification. In effect, Burns did not merely lead a team; he altered the nation’s cricketing map.

However, when the T20 World Cup begins on 7 February in India and Sri Lanka, Burns will not be part of the Italian squad. The Italian Cricket Federation (FCI) has confirmed that Wayne Madsen will captain the side, and that Burns will not be selected for the tournament at all. Madsen, who assumed the captaincy last month, is regarded as a central figure within the leadership group, valued for his extensive international and domestic experience.

In an official statement, the Federation explained that discussions regarding Burns’ availability had taken place in recent weeks but never resulted in a full contractual agreement. Following internal, technical, and organisational assessments, the decision was made to proceed without him.

Italy are yet to submit their final squad list, but their campaign will commence on 9 February in Kolkata against Bangladesh. Placed in Group C, Italy face a formidable challenge, with England, West Indies, and Nepal completing the group.

Burns’ personal journey adds profound emotional depth to this chapter. Born in Brisbane, he grew up in Australia, but his family’s roots trace back to Italy. During the Second World War, his grandfather was captured in North Africa while serving during Mussolini’s era. Like many displaced Europeans after 1945, the family eventually settled in Australia in search of a new beginning.

Tragedy struck in February 2024 when Burns’ elder brother, Dominic, passed away. On 28 May, Burns posted an image of Dominic’s No. 85 jersey on Instagram, announcing his decision to honour his brother’s memory by playing for Italy. His debut followed swiftly, on 9 June against Luxembourg.

Though absent from the World Cup squad, Joe Burns’ legacy within Italian cricket is already secure. Italy’s presence on the global stage remains, unmistakably, his enduring contribution.
