The prospect of Ravindra Jadeja being exchanged for Sanju Samson — once considered not just far-fetched but virtually impossible within IPL circles — is now very much on the table. Over the past few days, the proposed trade has entered active negotiations. While it is not yet a confirmed deal, Cricbuzz can confirm that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are seriously pursuing the arrangement.
Both Jadeja and Samson are valued at INR 18 crore, making it a high-profile swap. However, it is understood that Rajasthan Royals are reluctant to agree to a straight one-for-one trade. The franchise is reportedly insisting on the inclusion of an additional player, which could become a sticking point in the negotiations.
Sources suggest that RR have also explored other options with different franchises, such as Sunrisers Hyderabad, while keeping communication channels open with Lucknow Super Giants, Delhi Capitals, and Kolkata Knight Riders.
The major hurdle in the CSK-RR negotiations appears to be RR’s interest in Dewald Brevis, the South African all-rounder who joined CSK midway through last season. Since then, Brevis has emerged as one of the top batters in global franchise cricket, even attracting a record bid from Pretoria Capitals at the SA20 auction in September. Jo’burg Super Kings, a CSK subsidiary, withdrew only just before the winning bid.
Cricbuzz reports that Manoj Badale, the UK-based principal owner of Rajasthan Royals, currently stationed in Mumbai, is leading RR’s side of the negotiations. Meanwhile, CSK remain firm in their stance, with no intention of including another player in the trade, let alone Brevis.
From CSK’s perspective, letting go of Jadeja, arguably one of the best all-rounders in world cricket today, is already a significant concession. It is understood that the franchise consulted the 36-year-old veteran before initiating trade talks. At present, the ball is firmly in RR’s court.
As for Sunrisers Hyderabad, sources indicate the franchise is not particularly enthusiastic about acquiring Samson, given that they already have three established openers — Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan. The franchise has no plans to part with Ishan or Heinrich Klaasen, despite recent speculation.
The negotiations highlight the complexities and high stakes involved in player trades within the IPL, where star power, team balance, and franchise strategy all intersect.
