The Indian Premier League (IPL), renowned as one of the wealthiest and most popular cricket leagues in the world, is now under scrutiny following a high-profile domestic abuse complaint that has captivated public attention across India. A 35-year-old model, Garima Tiwari, has filed a case at the Additional Civil Judge (Senior Division) Court in Kanpur against her husband, Amit Mishra, and his family, accusing them of demanding dowry, inflicting physical and psychological abuse, and even instigating her towards suicide.
According to Garima, her relationship with Amit began in 2019 through Instagram, culminating in marriage on 26 April 2021 at a club in Kanpur after three years of courtship. She alleges that immediately after the wedding, Amit and his family began pressuring her family for dowry, demanding a Honda City car and 1 million Indian Rupees. At the time of marriage, Garima’s family could only provide 250,000 Rupees, which prompted ongoing harassment for the remaining amount.
Garima claims that Amit, often intoxicated, frequently assaulted her, verbally abused her, and occasionally withheld meals. Additionally, he allegedly confiscated her earnings from her modelling career and repeatedly threatened her with divorce. The prolonged abuse reportedly led Garima to abandon her modelling career, and she even attempted suicide by ingesting phenyl, resulting in hospitalisation.
Despite filing multiple complaints with the police, Garima alleges that no First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered, which she attributes to the influence of the Mishra family. Her lawyer, Karim Ahmed Siddiqui, stated: “Repeated complaints to the police yielded no action, leaving the court as the only recourse.”
A summary of the allegations is as follows:
| Allegation Type | Details |
|---|---|
| Dowry Demand | Honda City car and 1 million INR |
| Physical Abuse | Beatings while intoxicated, withholding food |
| Psychological Abuse | Verbal insults, seizure of earnings, threats of divorce |
| Police Inaction | Multiple complaints lodged but no FIR registered |
| Suicide Attempt | Ingested phenyl; hospitalised subsequently |
The case has ignited widespread societal debate, highlighting that even individuals with public acclaim and wealth are accountable under the law. It also raises pressing questions about morality, familial responsibilities, and social accountability within high-profile sporting institutions such as the IPL.
Legal experts and social commentators note that this is not merely a domestic dispute; it underscores the critical importance of safeguarding individual rights and upholding justice, irrespective of a person’s social or financial status.
