Investigation Report on Jahanara’s Complaint Submitted to BCB

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially received the investigation report regarding sexual harassment allegations filed by former national women’s team captain, Zahanara Alam. The five-member committee, established by the BCB to probe the matter, submitted its findings on Monday. Zahanara had accused a member of the team management of sexual misconduct, prompting the board to form a dedicated inquiry committee.

Prior to the submission of the report, a significant legal development occurred on Sunday. The High Court issued a rule seeking clarification on why the BCB’s prolonged silence on Zahanara’s complaint should not be declared legally improper. The ruling came from a division bench comprising Justice Ahmad Sohel and Justice Fatema Anwar, following a hearing of the writ petition concerning the delay. The court has instructed the BCB to explain why the investigation report was not submitted within the stipulated timeframe.

In addition, the court has directed the BCB to provide detailed information on the measures taken in response to Zahanara Alam’s allegations, as well as any steps planned for the future.

A BCB director, speaking to Jugantor, emphasised that the slight delay in the investigation was to ensure a thorough and transparent inquiry. “For the sake of a comprehensive and accurate investigation, the committee took some additional time. However, the report concerning Zahanara has now been duly submitted to the BCB. It will next be forwarded to the Disciplinary Committee,” the director said.

The director also assured that the contents of the investigation report would be made public in due course. Zahanara had lodged her complaint in November last year against Monjurul Islam, a former national cricketer, selector, and team manager for Bangladesh women’s cricket.

Following the public disclosure of her allegations, the BCB formed an independent investigation committee. The board extended the committee’s deadline twice, eventually directing that the report be submitted by 31 January. As the BCB office remained closed on the scheduled day, the committee officially submitted the report on the following day.
