Ashes Chaos: Hazlewood Ruled Out

Australia’s Ashes campaign has suffered a fresh blow with the confirmed absence of veteran paceman Josh Hazlewood from the opening Test in Perth. Initially assessed as a minor hamstring strain earlier in the week, Friday’s follow-up scans revealed more extensive damage, forcing selectors to remove him from the travelling squad. Hazlewood will now remain at home to undergo a structured recovery process, leaving the team scrambling to address an increasingly fragile fast-bowling line-up.

Cricket Australia emphasised that early imaging frequently fails to detect subtle muscular injuries, which explains the initial belief that Hazlewood’s hamstring issue was minor. The timing of his withdrawal is particularly unfortunate given the opening Test represents the first opportunity to set the tone for the series. The team’s management faces mounting pressure to find reliable replacements capable of sustaining high performance under Test conditions.

Queensland quick Michael Neser has been drafted into the squad to provide much-needed cover. Neser, who previously played during the 2021 Ashes in Adelaide, has just two Test caps but extensive domestic experience. He will serve as insurance for Hazlewood and fellow Queensland pacer Sean Abbott, who also sustained a hamstring strain during the same Sheffield Shield clash. Neser’s inclusion could prove critical should additional fast bowlers falter under the rigours of Ashes cricket.

The fast-bowling crisis continues to deepen, with Pat Cummins, Sean Abbott, Lance Morris, Jhye Richardson, Spencer Johnson, and Hazlewood all unavailable at various stages. In response, selectors are considering 31-year-old Brendan Doggett for a Test debut. Doggett has impressed this season, taking 13 wickets at an average of just 14.69 following a return from a minor hamstring injury. His performances in the Sheffield Shield have put him firmly on the selectors’ radar for Perth.

Meanwhile, Cummins continues his rehabilitation at the SCG, aiming to regain full fitness for the second Test at the Gabba on 4 December. Australia’s fast-bowling depth will be tested to the fullest if any further injuries occur, highlighting the importance of recovery and squad management in this early phase of the Ashes.
