In a thrilling display of batting and spin mastery, Gulf Giants returned to winning ways following a narrow Super Over defeat in their previous encounter. Chasing a target of 158 set by the Sharjah Warriorz, the Giants rode on a brilliant half-century from Rahmanullah Gurbaz and a stunning three-wicket spell from Aayan Khan to secure a six-wicket triumph.
The Warriorz had started their campaign with a flying start, scoring freely in the initial overs. Johnson Charles showcased his attacking instincts with two boundaries in each of the first two overs, putting immediate pressure on the Giants’ bowlers. However, Mark Adair struck early, removing Tom Kohler-Cadmore to put the Warriors on the back foot. Kusal Mendis countered with a boundary and a six, but the introduction of Aayan Khan in the eighth over proved pivotal. He quickly dismissed Mendis and then Charles in consecutive overs, reducing the Warriors to 69 for 3 after ten overs.
From overs seven to twelve, Aayan Khan and Liam Dawson bowled tightly, conceding just 31 runs. The Warriors’ middle-order attempted to revive the innings with Tim David hitting a few boundaries, but Aayan’s clever bowling produced another wicket. Dawson later captured Sikandar Raza to end the Giants’ disciplined spell. In the final overs, Dwaine Pretorius’ explosive 36 from 17 balls propelled the Warriorz to a competitive 157 for 6.
Without their in-form opener Pathum Nissanka, rested by the Sri Lankan board, the Giants relied on James Vince and Gurbaz to start the innings. Vince attacked Wasim Akram with three boundaries and a six in the second over, while Gurbaz launched two towering sixes off Tim Southee. The pair added a crucial 50-run partnership by the fifth over.
Middle overs saw the Warriors claw back with Sikandar Raza and Maheesh Theekshana controlling the run flow. However, Gurbaz’s 50 and timely hitting from Omarzai ensured the Giants stayed ahead. With 37 required from the final four overs, Omarzai’s big hitting kept the pressure on the Warriors, who ultimately fell short despite valiant efforts. Sean Dickson finished the game with the winning runs, cementing the Giants’ return to form.
