Government Orders Cricket Inquiry

The Government of Bangladesh has adopted a stringent stance against long-standing allegations of malpractice, nepotism and political influence within the country’s sporting administration, particularly focusing on the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). He further confirmed that the alleged pattern of irregularities dating back to 2008 would be systematically reviewed as part of the inquiry. The government’s central objective, he emphasised, is to depoliticise the sporting sector and establish a governance framework rooted in transparency, accountability and merit-based administration.

Responding to parliamentary questions regarding the current state of the BCB, the minister noted that he had been gathering information on a range of allegations since assuming office. These include reported inconsistencies in recruitment procedures and accusations of financial impropriety. Preliminary findings have already identified concerns involving certain officials, and detailed investigations are now being prepared.

He also highlighted worrying indications of unusual asset accumulation among some employees and officials of the board. Where necessary, the Anti-Corruption Commission may be called upon to assist in examining financial records and conducting further scrutiny. The minister expressed confidence that a thorough and impartial investigation would ultimately uncover the truth and ensure that appropriate action is taken against those found responsible.

The government has outlined three principal objectives for the inquiry: establishing a transparent recruitment system, identifying historical irregularities, and ensuring both administrative and legal accountability for any misconduct uncovered.
