Gill Headlines Punjab’s Strong Vijay Hazare Squad

Punjab have unveiled a formidable 18-man squad for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, with Shubman Gill returning to the spotlight after missing out on India’s recent World Cup selection. The announcement has generated considerable interest, as Punjab aim to make a deep run in India’s premier domestic one-day competition. Their campaign will begin on 24 December against Maharashtra, a fixture that promises to test the side’s balance and depth early in the tournament.

Gill’s inclusion is the centrepiece of the squad, not only because of his pedigree but also due to the leadership responsibilities he is expected to shoulder. Although he was omitted from the T20 World Cup squad and the T20 series against New Zealand, Gill is set to lead India’s ODI side in the forthcoming three-match series starting on 11 January. His presence lends Punjab both class and composure at the top of the order, provided international commitments do not limit his availability.

Alongside Gill, Punjab boast an impressive collection of star performers. Abhishek Sharma adds firepower and versatility at the top, while left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh remains the cornerstone of the bowling attack. Arshdeep was Punjab’s leading wicket-taker in the 2024–25 domestic season, and his form will be crucial as the side seeks consistency in pressure situations.

The batting line-up is further strengthened by a group of proven power-hitters and all-rounders, including Prabhsimran Singh, Naman Dhir, Anmolpreet Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Sanvir Singh and Harpreet Brar. This blend of aggression and adaptability gives Punjab the flexibility to dominate in the middle overs and accelerate at the death. Prabhsimran Singh and Salil Arora will share wicketkeeping duties, offering depth in both departments.

In the bowling unit, Gurnoor Brar and Krishan Bhagat are expected to provide vital support to Arshdeep, ensuring a balanced attack across conditions. However, there remains uncertainty over how many matches Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Arshdeep Singh will be available for, given India’s packed international calendar.

Punjab, who bowed out at the quarter-final stage last season, will play all seven of their league matches in Jaipur this year. They find themselves in a competitive group featuring Mumbai, Goa, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim. The league phase will conclude on 8 January, by which time Punjab will hope to have secured a strong position for the knockouts.

With a blend of international experience and domestic talent, Punjab’s squad appears well-equipped for a serious title challenge—provided availability and form align at the right moments.
