Cricket Prepares For Its Own European Championship

While football fans are familiar with the excitement of the European Championship, cricket enthusiasts may soon witness a similar continental spectacle. The idea, once a distant vision, is now taking concrete shape as Cricket Ireland begins planning for what could become Europe’s premier T20 tournament.

Brian McEnnis, chairman of Cricket Ireland, has confirmed that the “Euro Nations Cup” could take to the field as early as next year. The tournament is envisioned to follow a model akin to the Asia Cup, bringing together European cricketing nations in a competitive T20 format.

According to McEnnis, the inaugural edition could feature England, Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands, and Italy. Notably, both men’s and women’s competitions are being considered, signalling a commitment to promoting cricket across genders.

McEnnis first floated the idea during a T20 series against England last September, proposing the concept to officials from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). While Cricinfo reports that the ECB has not been actively involved in recent discussions, McEnnis remains confident in the project’s prospects.

“I have engaged with stakeholders at multiple levels, and the interest has been overwhelmingly positive,” McEnnis said. “The discussions are now at an advanced stage, and I am confident this tournament will happen.”

He also highlighted potential media interest, adding, “We are in conversation with various broadcasters. The Euro Nations Cup will include events for both men and women, and we anticipate strong broadcasting interest across Europe.”

In a related development, Cricket Ireland has announced long-term agreements with both the Emirates Cricket Board and the Nepal Cricket Association. Under these agreements, Ireland’s national team will play regular white-ball series against the UAE and Nepal. Additionally, from the 2026–27 season onwards, each franchise in the ILT20 will be required to include at least one Irish player, further strengthening the nation’s presence on the global stage.

The table below summarises the potential participants and tournament format:

Much like football’s Euro, this championship could soon become a landmark event in the European cricket calendar.
