Abu Dhabi Knight Riders (ADKR) continued their impressive start to the ILT20 season with a dominant four-wicket victory over Gulf Giants, powered by an exceptional bowling display from Piyush Chawla. The veteran spinner claimed four wickets for just 27 runs, effectively derailing the Giants’ innings and setting up a successful chase for his side. This result marks ADKR’s third win of the tournament and their second consecutive triumph, highlighting the team’s growing momentum.
Gulf Giants opted to bat first and were immediately boosted by the aggressive Rahmanullah Gurbaz. The Afghan opener was in scintillating form, hammering 72 runs off 45 balls with a mix of elegant drives and explosive hitting. Gurbaz reached the milestone of 6,000 T20 runs during the innings, celebrating with a mammoth six over long-on. Pathum Nissanka also showed glimpses of brilliance early, launching a huge six over the longer boundary before being dismissed by Olly Stone. Giants captain James Vince added elegance to the innings with a textbook cover-drive and a backfoot punch to the fence, keeping the scoreboard ticking.
The turning point came when Chawla was introduced in the seventh over. He immediately dismantled the Giants’ top order, claiming the wicket of Vince with his first delivery. The leg-spinner’s cunning variations soon accounted for Moeen Ali, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Matthew Forde, leaving the Giants struggling at 135 for six after 16 overs. Despite Gurbaz’s heroic effort, the regular loss of wickets prevented the Giants from posting a truly challenging total, and they eventually finished on 165 for seven.
ADKR’s chase began explosively, with Phil Salt and Alex Hales leading the charge. Salt hit consecutive boundaries in his first two deliveries, and the pair combined to bring up 53 runs without loss by the end of the PowerPlay. However, Tabraiz Shamsi’s double strike, removing Salt and Liam Livingstone, brought the Giants back into the contest. Hales continued to find the boundary at regular intervals, while Sherfane Rutherford injected life into the innings with a 16-run 14th over, featuring a 4,6,6 sequence.
ADKR’s middle order faced a brief wobble, losing three wickets in three overs and finding themselves at 138 for five after 17 overs, eerily similar to the Giants’ own struggles in the earlier innings. But Andre Russell’s raw power proved decisive; he launched two colossal sixes to finish off the chase, guiding ADKR to victory with four wickets and 19 balls to spare.
Piyush Chawla’s brilliance with the ball, coupled with the firepower of Hales, Salt, and Russell, proved too much for the Gulf Giants. The win consolidates ADKR’s position as a serious contender for the ILT20 title, while the Giants are left reflecting on missed opportunities despite a strong start.
