Captain Needs Time to Build Team: Miraz

Ahead of Bangladesh’s three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Pakistan, national team captain Mehedi Hasan Miraz addressed the media at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. While much of the discussion revolved around the upcoming matches, the focus repeatedly returned to Miraz’s captaincy, his personal form, and his leadership future.

Miraz, however, was keen to keep the emphasis on the present rather than future speculations. “My tenure as captain runs until June, and for now, I want to focus on this period. Whoever is appointed captain needs time to build a team properly, and that is what I intend to do with the time I have,” he said. “Cricket boards will take note and make decisions regarding the future, but my responsibility is to guide this team to a better position during my tenure.”

The captain’s ODI record to date has been modest. Out of 13 matches under his leadership, Bangladesh has won only three, two of which came in the most recent series against the West Indies. Despite these statistics, Miraz is using these experiences as motivation, particularly with the 2026 World Cup directly in sight.

“This series is critical, not for me personally, but for the team and for Bangladesh,” Miraz said. “Regardless of who is captain, our priority must be the country and securing a place in the World Cup. That is paramount.”

Bangladesh’s cricketing calendar last year largely centred on Twenty20 formats, leaving limited opportunities for ODIs. The team suffered a home series defeat to Sri Lanka, followed by a comprehensive loss to Afghanistan in the United Arab Emirates. This year, Miraz aims to set a fresh course for the ODI squad, nurturing young talent and building team cohesion.

He stressed the importance of supporting every player: “To build a team, every individual must perform. As captain, I must stand by each member. We have several talented and promising cricketers in the squad. My goal is to back them fully, and when they perform well, it will benefit the entire team.”
