Bumrah and Pant Apologise to Bavuma Over Controversial Remark

During last month’s India–South Africa Test in Kolkata, a minor controversy arose when Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant allegedly referred to South Africa captain Temba Bavuma as a “dwarf” during the match. The remark quickly drew attention, and both Bumrah and Pant reportedly apologised to Bavuma following the incident.

Bavuma, speaking to cricket portal ESPNcricinfo, confirmed the apology and reflected on the incident alongside comments made by South African coach Shukri Conrad regarding his “grovel” remark about the visiting Indian side.

The incident occurred during South Africa’s innings in the 13th over, when a delivery from Bumrah struck Bavuma’s pad. An LBW (Leg Before Wicket) appeal was made, but the on-field umpire did not respond. Following discussion with teammates, Bumrah decided not to take a review. It was during this conversation that he allegedly used the term “bawna” directed at Bavuma, a word roughly translating to “dwarf” or “short person.” The choice of words drew criticism once it became public.

Interestingly, when Bumrah and Pant approached Bavuma to apologise, he did not initially understand the reason for their apology due to language differences. He later clarified the situation with the help of the team’s media manager.

Bavuma explained:

“They had said something about me in their language, which I later understood. After the next day’s match, Bumrah and Pant came to apologise, but at the time, I wasn’t sure what it was for. Later, after speaking with the media manager, the matter became clear.”

The South African captain emphasised that he harbours no resentment towards the Indian players. “What happens on the field stays on the field. Words can be used as motivation or strength, but personally, I bear no ill will.”

The series also sparked debate over coach Shukri Conrad’s controversial remark that South Africa intended to make India “grovel” on the field—a phrase reminiscent of a 1976 England-West Indies Test comment by Tony Greig. Bavuma said:

“There was criticism over Conrad’s remark, and the media wanted me to comment. I felt it was best for Conrad himself to explain the context.”

Bavuma added that while the initial comment stung, it later highlighted the intensity and competitiveness of the Test series and the importance of team dynamics. He confirmed that the matter was settled amicably after the ODI series, with Conrad acknowledging he could have chosen better words.
