Both teams had shaky starts—one lost three wickets for just 5 runs, the other for 24 runs. The start of the innings for England and New Zealand in the first ODI of the series at Mount Maunganui was far from promising. However, the middle part of the innings made the difference. Except for captain Harry Brook and Jamie Overton, no one from England could take charge. But New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell found support from Michael Bracewell, Tom Latham, and Mitchell Santner.
By the end of the day, New Zealand, playing steadily, emerged victorious, overshadowing Brook’s “one-man show.” England’s total of 223 was surpassed by New Zealand with the loss of only six wickets. With 80 balls remaining, the Kiwis took a four-wicket victory and went 1-0 up in the three-match series.
Chasing the target, New Zealand faced an immediate onslaught from Brydon Carse. In the 2nd over, 5th ball, Will Young was bowled, and on the next ball, Kane Williamson gave a catch behind the stumps. In his 173-match ODI career, Williamson was out first ball for the first time. Shortly after, Luke Wood dismissed Rachin Ravindra, putting New Zealand in more trouble.
Coming in at number four, Mitchell then stitched a 40-run partnership with Tom Latham for the fourth wicket. After Latham was dismissed by Carse as his third victim, Mitchell built a big partnership with Michael Bracewell. Their fifth-wicket stand added 92 runs, with Bracewell scoring 51.
Later, the Mitchell-Santner partnership added another 49 runs, making the victory easier for the hosts. Santner scored 27, but Mitchell remained unbeaten on 78. In his 33-run innings, Mitchell hit 7 fours and 2 sixes.
Earlier, Harry Brook had carried almost the entire England innings. Facing the fire of Zakary Foulkes, England lost 3 wickets for 5 runs and 4 wickets for 10 runs, and at one stage were 56 for 6. From there, Brook added 179 runs with the last four wickets. With Wood, he put on a 57-run last-wicket stand—the highest in an ODI for England. Wood contributed 5 runs off 4 balls in that partnership.
Brook was the last man out, scoring 135. Despite England losing, he was named the player of the match for his outstanding innings. England’s second-highest scorer was all-rounder Jamie Overton, who made 46 runs. The third-highest scorer was Wood with 5.
