The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has approached the Supreme Court, urging that match-fixing be declared a criminal offense. The appeal was made to ensure strict action against illegal bookmakers and dishonest players.
In its statement to the Supreme Court, the BCCI said, “Match-fixing is a criminal act.” The board noted that the initiative was taken to uphold the justice and integrity of cricket. The report was carried by AFP.
AFP reported that, in its petition, the BCCI stated, “Unless match-fixing is declared a criminal offense, the game’s integrity will be seriously compromised and the principle of fair play will be undermined.”
In the document filed with the court registrar on October 14, the BCCI further mentioned that preventing corruption in cricket has now become a matter of national importance.
