Bangladesh has taken firm control of the second Test against Ireland at Mirpur. After dismissing the visitors for 265 in their first innings, the Tigers ended the third day at 156 for one in their second innings, securing a commanding lead of 367 runs. Sadman Islam remained unbeaten on 69*, with Mominul Haque supporting on 19*.
The day was marked by an unusual interruption when a mild earthquake shook the stadium, briefly halting play and causing momentary concern among players and spectators alike. Despite this, Bangladesh’s players maintained their composure, continuing their dominant performance. At the post-day press conference, senior spinner Taijul Islam emphasised the importance of the process over immediate results. “Two years ahead are unpredictable, but as a player, your performance defines how far you can go. The process is key,” he said, reflecting the team’s measured approach.
Ireland had attempted to build resistance early in the day. Lorcan Tucker scored a resilient 75*, holding one end firmly, supported by Andy McBrine. However, the Bangladesh bowlers, led by Taijul, broke the resistance, with Taijul taking four crucial wickets. Pacers Khaled Ahmed and Ibadat Hossain also contributed to restricting the visitors to 265.
Bangladesh’s captain, Shanto, opted against enforcing the follow-on, allowing his bowlers rest while the top order established a solid foundation. Opener Mahmudullah Joy and Sadman Islam put on an aggressive partnership, with Joy scoring 60 before falling. Sadman remained unbeaten, alongside Mominul, as Bangladesh scored 156 runs in just 37 overs at a run rate exceeding four per over.
With the pitch favouring spin, and the fourth day likely to see Bangladesh extend the lead further, Ireland faces an uphill battle. The Tigers are clearly playing for a comprehensive win, with Taijul and Miraz poised to exploit every opportunity.
