Bangladesh Begins World Cup Journey with Pakistan

Bangladesh is set to return to international cricket after more than three months, kicking off a three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Pakistan tomorrow at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. The team missed out on playing during the recent T20 World Cup, making this series a crucial step in preparing for the 2027 50-over World Cup, which will be hosted across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Bangladesh’s head coach Phil Simmons described the series as the beginning of the team’s World Cup journey.

The focus for Bangladesh extends beyond mere participation. To secure a direct spot in the World Cup, they must climb the ICC ODI rankings, currently sitting tenth. Achieving a position within the top eight will guarantee direct qualification. Pakistan, ranked fourth, will serve as the first benchmark on this path. However, Bangladesh has historically performed strongly at home against Pakistan; notably, in the 2015 series in Dhaka, Bangladesh swept Pakistan 3–0. Coach Simmons emphasised, “Our objective is to move up the table. While finishing seventh or sixth at qualification is good, our real goal is to play better cricket as a team and position ourselves among the leaders.”

Simmons also acknowledged the challenge posed by Pakistan, who will field six uncapped ODI players under the leadership of Shaheen Shah Afridi. “We cannot underestimate any player from Pakistan. Talent is always present, and newcomers earn their place on merit,” he said.

A key tactical adjustment for Bangladesh will see wicketkeeper-batsman Litton Das move to the middle order. Simmons explained, “Keeping for 50 overs as an opener is tough. Litton is one of our best against spin, and placing him in the middle order strengthens a traditionally weaker section of our batting line-up.”

All three ODIs will take place at Mirpur, providing Bangladesh the advantage of familiar home conditions. Simmons concluded, “This series is not just about victories; it is a vital step in our preparation for the 2027 World Cup. We are looking forward to testing ourselves and improving our rankings.”
