Allegations of Irregularities in Women’s Cricket Team Selection

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has responded to allegations of irregularities in the selection process of the Bangladesh Under-19 Women’s Cricket Team, as raised by cricketer Ria Akter. Following a thorough review of the relevant documents, the BCB has informed the National Sports Council (NSC) that no wrongdoing was identified in the selection process.

According to a press release issued by the BCB today, Ria Akter submitted a letter to the NSC on 8 September, highlighting concerns about the transparency of the Under-19 Women’s team selection. The NSC subsequently requested a detailed explanation from the BCB on 17 September regarding both the selection process and other matters related to women’s cricket.

The press release explained the delay in response, noting that the letter arrived at a time when most BCB departments were preoccupied with the cricket board elections, and routine operations were constrained. Following the 6 October election, the newly appointed BCB executive committee, after assigning responsibilities among its chairpersons, began reviewing the NSC letter and the supporting documentation.

After a meticulous review, the BCB confirmed that “no irregularities were found in the selection of the Under-19 Women’s Cricket Team.” The press release also noted that the issues raised by Ria Akter, which were connected to points mentioned in a previous interview with former captain Jahanara Alam, will be presented to a five-member investigative committee for further examination.

The board emphasised that this process reflects its commitment to transparency and fairness in women’s cricket, aiming to uphold confidence among players and stakeholders alike.
