Afghanistan-Sri Lanka Series Postponed, Reason Revealed

The much-anticipated bilateral cricket series between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates, has been officially postponed due to regional instability and logistical challenges related to travel. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed in a statement that the series is now planned for the latter part of 2026, with exact dates yet to be finalised.

The series was originally set to commence on 13 March and comprised six white-ball matches: three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) followed by three One Day Internationals (ODIs). According to the initial schedule, the T20I matches were to be played at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on 13, 15, and 17 March, while the ODIs were to take place at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on 20, 22, and 25 March.

Preparations for the series had been completed with the assistance of the Emirates Cricket Board, and both venues were fully equipped to host the matches. However, unexpected developments in early March created logistical difficulties affecting team travel and overall series management. These challenges prompted the ACB to engage in multiple consultations with all relevant stakeholders, including the Emirates Cricket Board and venue authorities.

Although the possibility of proceeding with the series was initially explored, the complexities could not be fully resolved in time. Consequently, the decision was made to postpone the series to ensure safety, operational efficiency, and smooth conduct.

The ACB emphasised that the UAE remains the preferred location for the rescheduled series, and both cricket boards will coordinate closely to announce the new schedule in due course. Officials expressed hope that the series will provide a competitive platform for both teams once conditions stabilise.

The initial schedule and its postponement can be summarised as follows:

The postponement has caused disappointment among cricket enthusiasts, but the boards’ decision prioritises safety and proper logistical management. Both teams are expected to maintain training and fitness programmes in anticipation of the rescheduled fixtures.

This series, once held, is expected to be a significant addition to both teams’ preparations for upcoming international tournaments, providing an opportunity to strengthen squad depth and test strategies under competitive conditions.
