Tamim Iqbal Withdraws from the Upcoming BPL Season

Former Bangladesh captain and one of the country’s finest opening batters, Tamim Iqbal, has officially withdrawn his name from this year’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). He has already informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) of his decision to pull out of the 23 November players’ auction. A senior member of the BPL Governing Council confirmed that Tamim requested his name be removed from the draft list.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Tamim clarified the matter himself, saying, “Yes, I will not be taking part in the BPL. I have requested Shahriar Nafees to withdraw my name from the players’ draft.” His decision has left fans disappointed, as he has been one of the tournament’s leading performers since its inception.

Tamim has been a regular feature in the BPL since its launch in 2012. Over the years, he established himself as one of the league’s most prolific and consistent run-scorers. In the most recent two editions, he played a pivotal role in guiding Fortune Barishal to back-to-back titles, leading from the front both as captain and as a top-order batter.

Yet his decision to opt out this season does not come as a major surprise. Tamim suffered a heart-related health scare during a domestic match in March last year and has not returned to professional cricket since. He has spent this period focusing on recovery and rehabilitation, with many questioning whether he would be fit in time for the upcoming season.

Compounding the situation is the withdrawal of Fortune Barishal, who will not be participating in the coming edition, citing time constraints. As Tamim served as the team’s central figure—both strategically and emotionally—Barishal’s withdrawal further simplified his decision to step aside.

In recent months, Tamim also appeared increasingly engaged in cricket administration. He was preparing to contest the upcoming BCB elections. However, he dramatically stepped back at the last moment, alleging undue governmental interference in the electoral process.

Together, these developments have reignited speculation about the future of one of Bangladesh’s greatest openers. With his BPL withdrawal and continued absence from competitive cricket, doubts continue to grow over whether Tamim will ever return to the field. Fans remain hopeful, but the uncertainty deepens with every passing decision.
