Cricket fans have been eagerly awaiting news about the upcoming 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) mini-auction, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally confirmed the date. The auction will take place on 16 December 2025, and, for the second consecutive time, the event will be held overseas rather than in India.
Initially, it was expected that Mumbai would host the auction, but those plans have changed. According to reports, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, has been chosen as the venue. The IPL has held auctions in Saudi Arabia before, notably in 2024, although that edition took place in Dubai. Previously, major IPL auctions have been hosted in Jeddah.
The mini-auction usually lasts just one day, and this year will be no different. Each franchise must submit its list of retained players to the BCCI by 3 PM on 15 November. The board will then release a list of players eligible for the auction, allowing teams to finalise their strategies and prepare for the bidding.
Following the conclusion of the 2025 IPL, the ‘trade window’ opened, allowing franchises to buy, sell, or exchange players. This trading period continues until one week before the auction and will reopen once the mini-auction concludes, remaining open until a month before the start of the IPL. Players acquired in the mini-auction, however, will not be available for further trades.
Several player movements have already been confirmed. Sanju Samson is set to move from Rajasthan Royals to Chennai Super Kings, while Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran will join Rajasthan Royals. Mumbai Indians have signed Shardul Thakur from Lucknow Super Giants and Sharafuddin Rutherford from Gujarat Titans, while Lucknow have brought in Arjun Tendulkar from Mumbai.
The 2026 IPL season is scheduled from 15 March to 31 May, and all ten franchises will now focus on strengthening their squads. With the auction and trade windows shaping the teams, cricket fans can look forward to another thrilling and competitive IPL season.
