Bangladesh’s premier cricket tournament, the BPL, will revert to the auction system for its 2026 edition, reinstating a fair and competitive platform for player recruitment. The BPL Governing Council has completed the auction framework and shared it with the five franchise owners for feedback. Once the proposals are approved by 21 November, the policy will be formally unveiled to the public.
Local players are categorised into six tiers, with Category A representing the elite. Category A local cricketers will command a base price of BDT 50 lakh, with incremental bids of BDT 5 lakh. Each franchise must secure a minimum of 13 local players through the auction, while being allowed to directly sign up to two players in Categories A or B prior to the auction. Teams cannot register more than 16 local players, and the maximum budget for local talent is set at BDT 4.5 crore, excluding direct signings.
International stars will also go under the hammer, divided into five categories. Category A foreign players will have a base price of USD 35,000, with increments of USD 5,000. Franchises are required to purchase at least two overseas players through the auction and can field two to four in match-day squads. The total budget for foreign players is USD 350,000, covering both auction and pre-signed players, with a maximum of two direct overseas signings allowed.
Direct signings are strictly regulated. Franchises may pre-sign two local and one to two international players, but all deals require approval from the BPL Governing Council. Team composition rules allow for a maximum of 22 members, with a limit of 12 staff including coaches, managers, and analysts. Payment terms are divided into three instalments: 25% at signing, 55% before the final league match, and 25% within a month of tournament completion, with tax deductions applied according to NBR rules.
This return to auction format is widely expected to create intense competition for top-tier players, while providing a platform for emerging Bangladeshi cricketers to gain recognition and lucrative contracts. The 2026 BPL promises a mix of tactical acumen, thrilling bids, and high-profile player acquisitions, ensuring fans are treated to an exhilarating season. Analysts also suggest that the structured auction approach will ensure players are valued fairly, preventing financial imbalance and promoting transparency across all franchises.
