Bangladesh have announced their squads for the upcoming T20 series against Australia and the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in June, with the selections confirmed during a rain interruption at Mirpur. Chief selector Habibul Bashar confirmed that Towhid Hridoy has been included in the Test squad, while also being appointed vice-captain for the T20 side.
The Test squad also features fast bowler Rejaur Rahman (Rabbiul Haque), who is yet to make his Test debut. His inclusion comes on the back of strong performances in domestic first-class cricket.
Hridoy, who has previously been considered for red-ball selection, was part of the squad during Bangladesh’s 2024 series against Sri Lanka due to an injury to Mushfiqur Rahim but has not yet made his Test debut. In first-class cricket, he has scored 983 runs in 16 matches and 23 innings at an average of 44.68, including three centuries.
Explaining Hridoy’s selection, Bashar noted that the batter’s consistent white-ball performances and ability to play impactful innings in first-class cricket influenced the decision. He also highlighted Bangladesh’s evolving approach towards a more aggressive style of Test cricket.
Fast bowler Rejaur Rahman (Rabbiul Haque) has been rewarded for his domestic performances. He took 22 wickets in nine innings in the National Cricket League last season at an average of 19, playing a key role in Rangpur Division’s championship-winning campaign. In 32 first-class matches, he has taken 107 wickets. He also recently claimed a five-wicket haul in the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) First-Class competition.
Although he has not scored a first-class century, he has two half-centuries and has been selected as a bowling all-rounder.
Several changes have also been made to the Test squad. Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been rested following discussions with the selectors. Fast bowlers Taskin Ahmed, Nahid Rana, and Shoriful Islam have also been rested, while Hasan Mahmud and Khaled Ahmed return. Zakir Hasan has been omitted following Sadhan Islam’s return.
For the T20 series against Australia, Hridoy has been named vice-captain after Saif Hassan stepped down from the role to focus on his batting. Nahid Rana has been included in the T20 squad as he will not be part of the Zimbabwe Test.
Injury concerns have ruled out Ripon Mondol and Tanzim Hasan Sakib, while Mohammad Saifuddin has been omitted from the T20 squad.
