Winning bonuses have long been part of Bangladesh cricket’s structure. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) includes “winning bonuses” in the national players’ central contracts, while additional rewards are often announced after major achievements. Following Bangladesh’s recent Test series victory over Pakistan, the BCB again intended to provide a financial bonus to the squad. However, the players declined the offer and instead requested that the money be used for infrastructure development at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, including the construction of a swimming pool and the renovation of the gymnasium.
The decision has been viewed as another indication of the changing mindset within the Bangladesh team, a transformation that has also been reflected in their performances on the field. After securing victory in the opening Test against Pakistan on a sporting wicket, Bangladesh could have opted for a flatter and safer surface in the second Test to reduce the risk of defeat and protect the series lead. Instead, the team chose another sporting wicket in Sylhet. Pakistan mounted periods of pressure during the match, but Bangladesh still completed a 2–0 series sweep.
BCB chief selector Habibul Bashar believes the result has sent a significant message to the wider cricketing world as well as to Bangladesh itself. Speaking to Prothom Alo, the former Bangladesh captain said many teams prefer flat pitches after winning the first Test in order to minimise the possibility of losing the series. According to him, Bangladesh may previously have adopted a similar approach, but the current side is no longer thinking in that manner.
There was also satisfaction within the BCB leadership after the series triumph. Interim BCB president Tamim Iqbal, who is also overseeing the board’s cricket operations department, credited the achievement to those directly involved with the team. Speaking to reporters at the BCB headquarters in Mirpur, Tamim praised the coaching staff, support personnel and cricket operations management for their contributions.
Bangladesh’s next Test assignment will come against Zimbabwe during a tour scheduled for July. The series will include one Test and three One Day Internationals. However, the Test against Zimbabwe is not part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle, meaning Bangladesh’s longer-term focus is already shifting towards the forthcoming tour of Australia.
In August, Bangladesh are due to tour Australia for a two-Test series in the World Test Championship, marking their first bilateral series in Australia in 23 years. None of the current Bangladesh squad members has experience of playing a bilateral series in Australia in any format, making the challenge particularly significant.
Captain Najmul Hossain has already called for further improvement ahead of the demanding tour. Habibul Bashar identified the opening partnership as an area requiring urgent attention. He pointed out that Bangladesh’s number-three batter is often forced to come to the crease within the opening 10 to 12 overs, which he described as an undesirable pattern in Test cricket. Bangladesh are currently ranked seventh in the Test rankings, and Bashar said improvements at the top of the order would be necessary if the team hopes to rise into the top five.
Bangladesh’s most recent Test memory against Australia remains a positive one. In 2017, Bangladesh won one of the two Tests played at home against the Australians.
Although there is still a Test against Zimbabwe to be played, Bangladesh’s preparations in red-ball cricket are now largely centred on Australia. The Zimbabwe Test is expected to serve as an important opportunity for the side to prepare itself for Australian conditions. Unless injuries or workload management concerns arise, Bangladesh intend to field their strongest available team in that match.
Habibul Bashar believes Bangladesh now possess the capability to compete strongly in Australian conditions. While he stopped short of predicting a series victory, he said the team should be capable of challenging Australia during the tour.
Bangladesh’s Upcoming International Schedule
| Opponent | Format | Scheduled Period | Venue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zimbabwe | 1 Test, 3 ODIs | July | Zimbabwe |
| Australia | 2 Tests | August | Australia |
After proving their capabilities at home against Pakistan, Bangladesh will now attempt to demonstrate similar competitiveness in overseas conditions, with the Australia series emerging as the team’s principal red-ball objective.
