Former Bangladesh cricket captain and ex-Magura-1 Member of Parliament, Shakib Al Hasan, has stated that he is fully prepared to return to Bangladesh and face ongoing legal proceedings, provided he is guaranteed an environment free from harassment and intimidation.
In an extended interview with an online media outlet, Shakib discussed his current situation, political ambitions, and conditions for returning home. He emphasised that while he is willing to engage with the legal system, his primary requirement is assurance that he will be treated strictly as an ordinary citizen without undue pressure, insecurity, or administrative harassment.
Shakib, one of Bangladesh’s most recognisable sporting figures, noted that following the conclusion of his sporting career, he intends to focus entirely on politics. He insisted that his political commitment is firm and unchanging, stating that he does not believe in switching parties for convenience or advantage. According to him, loyalty to a political organisation, once joined, forms a core part of his personal political philosophy.
Commenting on the broader political landscape, he argued that permanently banning or politically sidelining any party is inconsistent with democratic principles. While acknowledging that political powers may be restricted temporarily under certain circumstances, he warned that long-term exclusion risks undermining democratic stability and political culture.
He further stressed the importance of ending cycles of political revenge, saying that repeated patterns of retaliation have hindered national progress.
