In a significant realignment within the administrative hierarchy of Bangladesh cricket, former national captain Tamim Iqbal has been appointed to lead the newly established ad-hoc committee of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). This development has elicited a formal response from his long-standing contemporary and former captain, Shakib Al Hasan, who commented on both the governance transition and the contemporary form of the national squad.
The administrative shift follows the formal dissolution of the previous BCB Board of Directors, which had been led by Aminul Islam Bulbul, on 7 April 2026. The National Sports Council (NSC) intervened following an investigation into the October 2025 elections, which reportedly uncovered systemic irregularities and electoral fraud. Consequently, a temporary 11-member ad-hoc committee was formed to manage board operations, with Tamim Iqbal designated as its president. The appointment occurs at a juncture where the two iconic cricketers occupy vastly different professional environments: Tamim has transitioned into senior governance, while Shakib Al Hasan remains active on the global franchise circuit, currently based abroad due to domestic legal and political complexities.
Regulatory Mandate and Electoral Objectives
The ad-hoc committee led by Tamim Iqbal has been granted a specific three-month mandate, set to expire in July 2026. Its primary constitutional directive is to stabilise the board’s reputation and facilitate a transparent, credible electoral process to instate a permanent leadership structure. Although there had been significant speculation regarding Tamim’s future role, he has officially confirmed his intention to contest the upcoming election, seeking a long-term tenure as the permanent president.
Providing his perspective during a jersey launch event in Mumbai on 29 April 2026, Shakib Al Hasan emphasised the distinction between the current temporary appointment and a democratically elected mandate.
“I would like to state that he [Tamim Iqbal] was not elected to the position. He has been given the responsibility to organise an election,” Shakib remarked. He expressed a positive outlook on the prospect of Tamim’s permanent leadership, noting: “If he becomes the president, I believe he will have a long-term plan, and certainly, Bangladesh cricket will benefit from him.”
Appraisal of National Team Performance
Beyond administrative matters, Shakib Al Hasan offered a technical assessment of the Bangladesh national team’s recent competitive progression. He specifically cited the team’s performance during their tour of New Zealand, where Bangladesh secured a landmark one-day international (ODI) series victory (2-1) and won the opening fixture of the T20 International series.
Shakib identified a fundamental shift in the team’s operational philosophy, observing that the squad has moved away from a reliance on specific individual brilliance toward a more cohesive, collective strategy.
“The current Bangladesh team is in good stead. Previously, it used to be individuals; now it’s more about the team and that’s the better way forward,” Shakib stated. He further noted that the team’s current reliance on collective strength is a superior approach for ensuring long-term international success.
Context of the Leadership Transition
The dissolution of the Aminul Islam Bulbul-led board—characterised by the former president as a “constitutional coup”—marks a volatile chapter for the BCB. The NSC’s decision to appoint the 11-member committee, which includes former prominent players such as Minhajul Abedin Nannu and Atahar Ali Khan, was intended to restore institutional credibility following allegations of corruption and “state interference.”
While the historical personal relationship between Shakib and Tamim has been the subject of extensive media scrutiny following reports of a professional rift prior to the 2023 World Cup, Shakib’s recent comments reflect a pragmatic endorsement of Tamim’s administrative potential. The next three months will be a pivotal period for the BCB as it attempts to navigate these internal restructures while maintaining the national team’s competitive momentum on the international stage. The focus now remains on the successful execution of the board elections, scheduled to conclude by early July 2026, which will determine the permanent administrative trajectory for cricket in Bangladesh.
