Bumrah Endures Extended Wicket Drought

All teams in the current edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have completed four matches, and the tournament’s official statistics provide a clear overview of individual bowling performances. According to the IPL’s statistical section, 66 bowlers have taken at least one wicket so far. However, India’s premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is notably absent from that list.

A similar pattern is reflected across other widely used cricket statistics platforms, where Bumrah does not appear among the wicket-takers. The reason is straightforward: he is yet to claim a wicket in the current IPL season. Despite featuring in all four matches for Mumbai Indians, Bumrah remains wicketless.

In the most recent fixture against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, which Mumbai Indians lost by 18 runs, Bumrah again failed to take a wicket. This extends his run to five consecutive IPL matches without a dismissal. His previous wicketless outing dates back to the 2025 IPL second qualifier against Punjab Kings, where he conceded 40 runs without success as Mumbai lost by five wickets.

Across the four matches this season, Bumrah has bowled a total of 15 overs, delivering 90 balls without taking a wicket. This makes him the bowler with the highest number of deliveries bowled without a wicket in the current tournament. Harshal Patel of Sunrisers Hyderabad ranks second on this list, having bowled 46 deliveries without success, highlighting the significant gap.

Data from CricViz indicates that Bumrah has now bowled 122 consecutive deliveries in the IPL without taking a wicket, marking the longest such sequence in his IPL career.

Despite these figures, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has suggested that evaluating Bumrah solely on wickets would be misleading. In his assessment, Bumrah’s effectiveness lies in his precise yorkers and his ability to restrict scoring, particularly at venues such as Wankhede Stadium, which are generally considered favourable for batting.

Ashwin stated that focusing excessively on Bumrah’s lack of wickets could be counterproductive for the team. He emphasised that maintaining pressure through accurate bowling and limiting runs is often more critical than pursuing wickets, especially in high-scoring conditions.

He further noted that in T20 cricket, a bowler’s ability to take wickets can depend significantly on support from the opposite end. Without sustained pressure from both ends, creating wicket-taking opportunities becomes more difficult. Ashwin added that the concept of paired, defensive bowling strategies within a bowling unit is still not consistently established in the format.

Statistical data provides some support for this perspective. Bumrah currently has the best economy rate among Mumbai Indians bowlers this season. Across his four matches and 15 overs, he has conceded runs at an average of 8.20 per over. While this is higher than his established standards, it remains comparatively effective within his team’s bowling unit.

For context, Bumrah’s career economy rate in T20 cricket stands at 6.93, while his IPL career economy rate is slightly higher at 7.27, indicating that his current figures are above his usual benchmarks.

The following table summarises Bumrah’s performance in the current IPL season:

Overall, while Bumrah’s absence from the list is statistically significant, his role in controlling the run rate remains evident in the available data.
