Rashid Khan’s participation in Test cricket has come under scrutiny amid ongoing concerns over his back condition, with Afghanistan’s coaching staff prioritising the long-term health of the leading spinner over immediate selection decisions.
The 26-year-old leg-spinner, currently representing Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, has been managing a recurring back issue that has raised questions about the sustainability of his workload across formats. While Rashid has expressed a desire to continue his international career, he has also indicated that reducing his involvement in Test cricket may help prolong his playing future.
In recent comments, Rashid revealed medical advice highlighting the potential risks of continuing in the longest format. He said: “The doctor told me, ‘If you do not want to play cricket, then continue playing red-ball cricket.’ Because it will not be good for you. You will not be able to play for Afghanistan for a long time.” He further added that after bowling extensive spells, including “67 (55) overs” across two innings against Zimbabwe, his medical consultant was reportedly surprised and advised against such workload.
Rashid’s comments have placed his participation in Afghanistan’s one-off Test against India scheduled for June in doubt. The final decision is expected to depend on medical assessments, workload considerations, and discussions between selectors and coaching staff.
Afghanistan head coach Richard Pybus has publicly supported a cautious approach, stressing player welfare and long-term management. He stated that forcing participation in red-ball cricket could risk Rashid’s career longevity. Pybus said: “I’m sure that there will be discussions around playing one Test a year about which Test does he play? But you know, there’s a health issue with Rashid. We have to think about his long-term health outside of cricket as well.”
He further added that selection decisions must be guided by medical history and workload considerations: “It all depends on his physical condition. I have not yet had discussions with the selectors about multi-format players. But given his back issues and where he has come from, it is a player-management issue.”
Pybus also emphasised the importance of avoiding unsustainable workloads: “Nobody wants to put a player in a situation where their long-term health is compromised because of workload that is not sustainable.”
The coach is currently in Afghanistan, where he has taken part in discussions with the selection committee and met officials from both international and domestic cricket departments. He has also visited the High Performance Centre in Kabul as part of preparations for upcoming skill development and training camps.
Rashid, meanwhile, has indicated that his broader focus includes preparing for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, suggesting that format prioritisation may be part of his long-term planning.
