Ben Duckett Withdraws from IPL Despite Sanction Risks

For the first time, England star opener Ben Duckett had secured a franchise spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL), signing with Delhi Capitals for 2 crore rupees. However, just before the tournament’s commencement, Duckett withdrew from the competition, citing a desire to prioritise his place in the England national team. This late decision carries the risk of sanctions, as IPL rules permit franchises to impose penalties on players who withdraw at short notice.

Prioritising England Over IPL

The left-handed batsman has struggled with form since the last Ashes series, and he was sidelined during the recent T20 World Cup, despite being included in the squad. While Duckett aspires to play in all formats for England, he has been inconsistent in limited-overs cricket, with a stronger focus on regaining form in Test cricket. Opting to return to domestic cricket, he will represent Nottinghamshire in the County Championship, hoping regular play will bolster his Test prospects.

Risk of Sanction

By withdrawing after registering with Delhi Capitals, Duckett faces the possibility of a two-year ban, echoing the fate of his compatriot and captain Harry Brook, who received a similar penalty in 2025 for pulling out late. IPL franchises have previously ruled that foreign players who withdraw on short notice are subject to sanctions. Duckett acknowledged the potential consequences but maintained that the decision was in the best long-term interests of his international career.

Statement from Duckett

In an interview with The Telegraph, Duckett said:
“This was an incredibly difficult decision, and I apologise to everyone at Delhi. When I entered the auction, it felt like a fantastic opportunity. Delhi Capitals chose me, which was thrilling. The IPL is the best competition in the world with top players, and it would have been an amazing experience. I may be saying goodbye to the IPL before even playing, but I believe this is the right choice for my career at 31. I hope one day to represent Delhi.”

Recent Form and Career Context

Duckett’s form has been a concern over the past year. In his last 28 matches across domestic and international cricket, he has scored just one half-century. During the 2025 Ashes in Australia, he managed 202 runs in 10 innings as England suffered a 4–1 series defeat. The inability to play in the World Cup further compounded his frustrations, leaving him determined to rebuild his confidence through consistent domestic cricket.

Domestic Focus to Regain Form

Duckett emphasised that playing in the County Championship offers invaluable preparation for England’s Test side. Regular runs and match practice in Nottinghamshire are seen as essential for restoring his form and securing his international future.
