Amid ongoing conflict in the Middle East and a global energy crisis, the organisers of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 have taken the difficult decision to limit the tournament’s venues. Instead of the originally planned six cities, all matches will now be held exclusively in Lahore and Karachi, with games staged in empty stadiums to ensure safety and operational efficiency.
At a press briefing, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi stated, “These stadiums normally host around 30,000 spectators daily. Given the current circumstances, we cannot allow public access for safety reasons. This is a hard but necessary decision. Additionally, the opening ceremony has been cancelled.”
The league will officially commence on 26 March at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, where the defending champions Lahore Qalandars will face the new franchise Hyderabad Kingsmen. Despite the absence of fans, the PCB assures that the competitive intensity and on-field excitement will remain vibrant and engaging for audiences watching remotely.
The decision to reduce venues and hold matches behind closed doors primarily responds to security concerns and ongoing energy shortages, which have impacted logistics and stadium operations. Concentrating matches in two cities allows the organisers to manage security, facilities, and pitch conditions more effectively while protecting players, staff, and officials.

By consolidating the tournament to just two cities, the PCB aims to ensure continuity and uphold the league’s reputation internationally. Officials emphasise that while fans will miss the stadium experience, the televised coverage and digital platforms will maintain the league’s signature thrill and energy.
PSL organisers remain optimistic that these measures will provide a safe and well-managed environment, preserving the integrity and excitement of the competition. Players and staff will benefit from streamlined operations, while international cricket enthusiasts can continue to follow the tournament without disruption.
