Afghanistan Cricket Faces Potential Captaincy Change

Afghanistan’s national cricket team is once again under scrutiny following a period of fluctuating performances in international tournaments. The team’s disappointing display in the 2023 One-Day International (ODI) World Cup, particularly due to weaknesses in the bowling department, left fans and analysts concerned about the squad’s consistency on the global stage.

The subsequent year brought a historic high, as Afghanistan reached the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup. That achievement temporarily cemented their status as one of Asia’s stronger cricketing sides. However, recent outings in the Asia Cup and the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup tell a different story. Afghanistan has been eliminated in the group stages of both competitions, signalling a worrying decline in form and raising questions over leadership and team strategy.

Rashid Khan currently leads the team in T20 internationals, a format in which Afghanistan has traditionally been considered competitive and balanced. Yet, the Afghan Cricket Board (ACB) is reportedly reviewing the captaincy in light of the recent setbacks. While the board has shown patience following substantial changes to the coaching staff ahead of the last World Cup, the possibility of a leadership shift remains open.

ACB Chief Executive Nasib Khan told CricBuzz, “Reform within the team is essential. To build a sustainable squad for the future, certain changes are necessary. We have already replaced the head coach, batting coach, and trainer. Similarly, internal adjustments will be made. However, no final decision has been taken regarding the captaincy.”

Under former coach Jonathan Trott, both Rashid Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq led the team to notable successes. Disagreements with Trott, however, prompted his departure just before the World Cup, with Richard Pybus assuming the role of head coach. Afghanistan is scheduled to play a white-ball series against Sri Lanka in Dubai and Sharjah later this month, although political instability in the Middle East has cast uncertainty over the series.

Looking further ahead, the ACB aims to commence preparations for the 2027 and 2028 World Cups under new management. Nasib Khan explained, “After the Sri Lanka series, Pybus will return to Afghanistan. We will introduce the new management team, identify emerging talent from domestic leagues, and initiate long-term preparations.”

Afghanistan will also tour India in June to face the host team, with logistical arrangements being overseen by Khan in Dubai. He added, “If conditions remain stable, we will proceed according to plan.”
