Siraj’s saying: Nothing can alter what Allah has decreed.

Mohammed Siraj had meticulously planned February to be a month of personal indulgence and preparation. He had envisioned watching Real Madrid play at Santiago Bernabéu on the 15th, spending quality time with his family, and gearing up for the holy month of Ramadan. After leading Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy, a period of rest and recuperation seemed the perfect priority. The T20 World Cup, at that time, felt like a distant dream.

Yet fate had other plans.

In a span of just 24 hours, Siraj’s carefully laid schedule transformed completely. The football match was abandoned, and a call from the Indian national team had him packing for Mumbai instead. Astonishingly, it wasn’t until the day before India’s opening T20 World Cup fixture against the United States that Siraj even knew he would feature in the tournament.

Having been largely absent from the T20 squad over the past 18 months, Siraj had assumed that this World Cup would not be his stage. Speaking at a press conference, he admitted, “I never thought I would play in this World Cup. When I wasn’t being picked for T20s, I had accepted that this tournament wasn’t meant for me.”

But sometimes, everything changes in an instant.

Pacer Harshit Rana was forced out due to a knee injury in India’s warm-up matches. In need of a quick replacement, selectors turned their gaze towards Siraj. Soon after, a phone call from India captain Suryakumar Yadav set the wheels in motion.

Siraj recounted, “Two days ago, Suryakumar bhai called me and said, ‘Miyan, pack your bags and come to Mumbai.’ I told him, ‘Brother, don’t joke, this isn’t supposed to happen.’ But he insisted, ‘I’m serious, get ready.’”

Shortly after, Pragnya Ojha, a member of India’s selection committee, confirmed the news. Only then did Siraj realise that his Madrid plans had to be shelved—even though his flight tickets were already booked.

Speaking exuberantly during a post-match presentation, Siraj reflected on the extraordinary turn of events: “Ojha bhai called me next, and I realised that what Allah has written, no one can change. I was meant to be here.”

He added, “I was supposed to watch the Real Madrid match on the 15th and then prepare for Ramadan. But what Allah has written is what happens.”
