After a disappointing ODI series defeat at home to New Zealand, India roared back with emphatic dominance in the T20 International (T20I) series. On Saturday, 31 January, India posted a mammoth 271 runs in the fifth and final T20I, securing a 46-run victory as the Kiwis were bowled out for 225. This win sealed the series 4–1 in India’s favour.
The triumph was not just about victory; it was a day of multiple records for the Indian team. India’s total of 271 runs ranks as the third-highest in international T20I history, while the team now holds the record for the most innings of over 250 runs in T20Is by any side, with four such innings to their name. Previously, Zimbabwe shared this record with India.
Indian batsmen were particularly destructive, hitting 23 sixes in the match, marking the highest number of sixes by a Full Member nation in a single T20I innings. This feat equalled the six-hitting record set by South Africa against India in Johannesburg earlier in 2024. Across the series, India smashed a total of 69 sixes, establishing a new world record for the most sixes in a bilateral T20I series. The series as a whole produced 116 sixes, with New Zealand contributing 47, ranking it the third-highest combined tally in bilateral T20Is.
The final match also witnessed individual brilliance. Ishan Kishan scored a 42-ball century, his fastest against New Zealand in T20Is and the fifth-fastest T20I century by an Indian. Meanwhile, skipper Suryakumar Yadav reached 3,000 international T20I runs in just 1,822 balls, surpassing the previous record held by Mohammad Wasim of the UAE, who took 1,947 balls.
Not all records favoured India’s bowlers, however. Jasprit Bumrah conceded 58 runs in his four overs, marking the most expensive T20I spell of his career. Notably, he gave away 22 runs in the 14th over alone—the most he has ever conceded in a single over in international T20 cricket.
