Uncertainty has clouded Bangladesh’s participation in the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup. Due to concerns over security and ongoing political tensions, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had formally requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to consider hosting the team’s matches outside India. However, the ICC has firmly rejected the appeal, stating that after thorough security assessments, no credible or verifiable threat was identified.
The ICC further emphasised that altering the tournament schedule just weeks before its commencement would “undermine the integrity of an ICC event.” The BCB has been instructed to confirm within 24 hours whether Bangladesh will compete on Indian soil. Should Bangladesh opt out, Scotland is slated to take their place in Group C.
Bangladesh has consistently participated in every T20 World Cup since its inception, achieving its best result in 2024, finishing seventh. The team’s historical performance is summarised below:
| Year | Host Country | Final Position | Notable Events / Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2007 | South Africa | Group Stage Exit | First-ever T20 World Cup appearance |
| 2009 | England | Super 8 Exit | Signs of improvement visible |
| 2010 | Bangladesh | Group Stage Exit | Strong home support for the team |
| 2021 | UAE | Super 12 Exit | Valuable experience from key victories |
| 2024 | Bangladesh | 7th Place | Highest-ever finish for the nation |
BCB President Aminul Islam commented on the ICC’s ultimatum, saying: “I have requested a final consultation with the government. The ICC has accepted this and expects a response within 24 to 48 hours. We do not want to pressure the government unduly. Our preference remains for the tournament to be moved to Sri Lanka. Though the ICC rejected our request, we will hold one final discussion with the authorities.”
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has voiced support for Bangladesh, highlighting what they perceive as a double standard: “Matches involving Pakistan were moved to Dubai due to Indian pressure, yet Bangladesh’s request was denied. This is deeply disappointing.”
Later today at 3:00 PM, Bangladesh’s sports adviser, Asif Najrul, is scheduled to meet the squad to provide updates and gauge players’ perspectives. Captain Liton Das remarked: “It is not safe for me to comment. Can we be certain we are going to the World Cup?”
Tensions escalated recently when Mustafizur Rahman was withdrawn from the IPL. He had been part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad but was removed at the request of the BCCI. Bangladesh subsequently cancelled its India tour and imposed a broadcasting ban on the IPL.
With the ICC’s strict ultimatum and ongoing security concerns, Bangladesh cricket faces a critical crossroads. The BCB’s decision in the next 24–48 hours will determine whether the national side competes in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
