Bangladesh has now lost all hope of the World Cup.

Over the past several days, there has been little to cheer for supporters of the Bangladesh cricket team regarding the upcoming World Cup. Both national and international media have persistently reported negative developments concerning the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Despite attempts by BCB officials to refute these reports, they were ultimately unsuccessful in influencing the final decision of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

In a virtual meeting of the ICC Executive Committee held on Wednesday, the voting results showed that Bangladesh was effectively isolated. While the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) cast the sole vote in support of Bangladesh, twelve full-member nations and two associate members withheld their backing. Consequently, Bangladesh will be required to participate in the World Cup on Indian soil. The ICC has instructed the BCB to finalise its decision within 24 hours. Should Bangladesh choose not to participate, Scotland will be offered the opportunity to take their place.

An ICC press release confirmed that the World Cup schedule will remain unchanged. It emphasised that India’s security measures are considered safe for Bangladeshi players, officials, journalists, and fans. Furthermore, independent verification of news links previously flagged by the BCB as potential security threats revealed no substantiated risks. The issue concerning Mustafizur Rahman during the IPL franchise league was clarified as unrelated to World Cup security.

Weeks of continuous discussions between the ICC and the BCB focused on independent security assessments, venue-specific safety plans, and official assurances from the host nation. The ICC has reassured Bangladesh that there are no credible security threats in India.

The ICC reaffirmed that World Cup venues and schedules were determined based on independent threat assessments, guarantees from host nations, and participation criteria. Bangladesh’s security is not considered critically at risk, and there is no independent evidence supporting a relocation of matches. The ICC further warned that any disruption caused by security concerns could undermine fairness and neutrality.

Internally, the BCB’s decision-making remains influenced by government advisories. While Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Nazrul has supported playing in India, some BCB officials opposed it. Despite delays in visa approvals and No Objection Certificates for India and Sri Lanka, the BCB’s CEO, Nizamuddin Chowdhury, has yet to resolve these issues.

Ultimately, Bangladesh must confirm participation in the World Cup in India, adhering fully to ICC security guidelines and protocols.
