Former Australian cricket star Damien Martin has been hospitalised in critical condition and is currently in an induced coma. According to reports, the 54-year-old has been diagnosed with meningitis, a serious and potentially life-threatening inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
Martin fell ill last week on Boxing Day. His condition worsened while he was resting at home, prompting an emergency hospital admission. Australian media have confirmed that he is receiving intensive treatment for meningitis under close medical supervision.
Sharing his support, former Australian captain and close friend Adam Gilchrist told The Australian, “He is receiving the best possible care. Amanda and the family know that so many people are praying for them and sending their best wishes.”
Former Australian coach Darren Lehmann also extended a message of solidarity, writing on social media, “Much love and prayers… stay strong, keep fighting, legend. Love to the family.”

He was a key member of Steve Waugh’s formidable side, representing Australia in 67 Test matches and 208 One Day Internationals (ODIs). He was also an integral part of Australia’s victorious 2003 ODI World Cup squad, scoring an unbeaten 88 in the final against India, forming a match-winning partnership with Ricky Ponting. Martin retired from international cricket during the 2006 Ashes series. Following his playing career, he briefly worked as a commentator before largely stepping away from the public eye.
