Rangpur Riders could scarcely have asked for a more convincing opening to their Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) campaign, as they cruised to a comprehensive seven-wicket win over Chattogram Royals in their first match of the season. Displaying authority with both ball and bat, Nurul Hasan Sohan’s side chased down a modest target of 103 with remarkable ease, reaching the mark in just 15 overs and still holding five wickets and plenty of time in reserve.
Set a target that was never likely to seriously test their batting depth, Rangpur began the chase in dominant fashion. Openers Litton Das and England’s David Malan immediately seized control, combining fluency with intent to all but extinguish Chattogram’s hopes inside the powerplay. Their opening partnership laid the foundation for a one-sided contest, as they rotated the strike comfortably while punishing any loose deliveries.
Litton Das was the first to depart, dismissed with the score on 91. He played a polished innings of 47 from 31 balls, striking four boundaries and two sixes, before falling to Mukidul Islam. Briefly, Chattogram sensed an opening when Towhid Hridoy followed soon after, scoring just one run from three balls to become Mukidul’s second victim. However, any thoughts of a late twist were quickly dispelled by David Malan, who remained calm and composed at the crease. The left-hander was dismissed just two runs short of victory, having scored a match-winning 51, embellished with five fours and two sixes. Rangpur eventually crossed the line with five overs to spare, underlining the gulf between the two sides on the night.
Earlier, Chattogram Royals’ troubles began almost immediately after losing the toss and being asked to bat first. In the very first over, Adam Rossington was dismissed, caught by Alis Islam off the bowling of Nahid Rana. Naim Sheikh then attempted to counterattack, producing a brisk and entertaining innings. He struck 39 from just 20 balls before falling to Mustafizur Rahman, whose clever variations brought an end to the resistance.
Once Naim departed, Chattogram’s batting collapsed alarmingly. Mahmudul Hasan Joy was dismissed for a duck, and the middle order offered little stability. The turning point came in the middle overs when Fahim Ashraf delivered a devastating spell. Beginning with the wicket of Mahfizul Islam Robin, Fahim proceeded to dismantle the batting line-up, removing Masud Gurbaz, captain Sheikh Mehedi and Shariful Islam in quick succession. His five-wicket haul was completed with the dismissal of Abu Haider Rony, sealing a thoroughly dominant bowling performance. Chattogram were eventually bowled out for 102 in 17.5 overs.
