Players Ready and Focused as BPL Countdown Continues

The atmosphere at Mirpur’s cricket academy was buzzing with activity yesterday, as Bangladesh Premier League fever began to sweep through the players.

After finishing his training session, Akbar Ali had just stepped off the academy field when left-arm spinner Najim Hasan spotted him from a distance. With a playful smile, Najim saluted Akbar, prompting the young wicketkeeper-batsman to approach, laughter and chatter immediately filling the air. Their casual banter and cricketing discussions reflected the relaxed yet focused mood among the players.

Shortly after, Ripon Mondol was seen waiting by his car. Fresh from his impressive performances in the Asia Cup Rising Stars, Ripon was patiently waiting for his teammate Mehrab Hossain. Once Mehrab arrived, the duo set off for the Rajshahi team’s hotel, ready for their BPL preparations.

Minutes later, pace bowler Nahid Rana emerged from the academy building, wearing the national team’s training jersey. A journalist quipped, “Your BPL hasn’t started yet!” Laughing, Nahid replied, “Just a few hours to go,” before hopping into a Rangpur Riders car, bound for the Bashundhara Sports Complex to join the franchise’s training session.

Throughout the day, fragmented glimpses of practice and busy cricketers signalled the approach of the much-anticipated BPL. The first team to begin sessions was the Rajshahi Warriors, while yesterday saw the Dhaka Capitals, Rangpur Riders, and Sylhet Titans take to the field.

Despite ongoing controversies and public concerns, the tournament is set to commence on 26 December in Sylhet. The Sylhet Titans began their practice sessions yesterday, while other teams continue to prepare in Dhaka. The opening match on Friday at 3:00 pm will feature Sylhet against Rajshahi, followed by the second match at 8:00 pm between Chittagong and newcomers Noakhali.

Teams and their foreign signings are expected to travel to Sylhet tomorrow. Tickets for the opening day sold out rapidly, with 50 percent gone within just two hours.

Players have begun sharing their expectations and strategies for the tournament. Akbar Ali, top performer in the recent NCL T20 with 222 runs in eight matches, said, “I’ll give my best whenever I get the opportunity and aim to carry the same mindset from the NCL into the BPL.”

Nahid Rana, who gained attention in the last BPL season, promised to showcase new skills, saying, “I’ll build on previous performances and try to apply the new techniques I’ve been working on.” Meanwhile, Mohammad Mithun, who led Chittagong Kings to the final last season, will captain the Dhaka Capitals. On his appointment, Mithun stressed, “A strong start is crucial. The quicker we gel as a team at the beginning, the more it will benefit us later.”

With teams in high spirits, preparations are in full swing, and the countdown to the BPL’s opening matches is intensifying both on and off the field.
