Bangladesh’s pace bowling has made remarkable strides in recent years, a fact recognised across the cricketing world. When Pakistan’s legendary fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar—renowned for holding the record for the fastest delivery in international cricket—arrived in Dhaka as mentor for BPL side Dhaka Capitals, the conversation naturally turned to the nation’s pacers.
Speaking at a press conference at a Banani hotel, Akhtar expressed his enduring affection for Bangladesh: “I will always take any opportunity to return here. Bangladesh holds a special place in my heart, and I will never miss a chance to come back.”
Akhtar singled out Taskin Ahmed as a standout performer among Bangladesh’s current pace attack. “Taskin bowls with full commitment. It’s thrilling to watch him—sharp, focused, and energetic,” he said. He also praised Nahid Rana, emphasising the importance of maintaining physical conditioning and a strong mental approach to fast bowling. “For Nahid, it’s about high-level training, muscle strength, consistency, and the right mindset. If he applies himself, he could become one of the world’s top fast bowlers,” Akhtar noted.
Reflecting on the pace attack’s overall progress, he said, “They’re doing well. I sincerely hope they perform strongly in the upcoming World Cup. Bangladesh has the potential to become a formidable force on the world stage.”
Akhtar, who took 178 wickets in 46 Tests, 247 wickets in 163 ODIs, and 19 wickets in 15 T20Is for Pakistan, also compared Bangladesh’s rising stars to some of the finest fast bowlers in the region. “Nahid and Taskin are in the same league as Bumrah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Naseem Shah. Pakistan also has a few others capable of extreme pace,” he said.
He complimented Bangladesh’s pace bowling coach, Shaun Tait, calling him “one of the finest coaches in fast bowling today.” On working with Bangladesh’s bowlers, Akhtar added, “With Tait in charge, I’m not essential. He’s exceptional, and the bowlers are in excellent hands.”
Akhtar also praised Bangladesh’s younger talents, highlighting Litton Das and other promising players. “They showed magic in the Pakistan series and must believe in their ability to win major T20 tournaments or even reach the final,” he said.
