“Shoaib Akhtar Hopes Taskin Will Break His Speed Record”

Shoaib Akhtar, the legendary Pakistani fast bowler famously known as the “Rawalpindi Express,” delivered the fastest ball in cricket history at the 2003 ODI World Cup, clocking a staggering 161.3 km/h. That record has remained unbroken for over 22 years. Yet, in a heartening show of sportsmanship and encouragement, Akhtar has expressed his desire for Bangladesh’s pace sensation, Taskin Ahmed, to surpass his record.

Currently in Dhaka as the mentor of Dhaka Capitals for the upcoming 2026 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Akhtar attended a press conference on Monday, 15 December, where he addressed the prospect of seeing his record broken. Speaking about Taskin’s potential, Akhtar remarked, “I hope Taskin breaks my record for the fastest delivery. That is something I would be very proud of.”

Alongside Taskin, the Dhaka Capitals squad includes promising young pacer Maruf Mridha. Akhtar emphasised that both experienced and emerging bowlers have much to learn from his decades of international cricket experience.

Addressing young fast bowlers in particular, Akhtar offered invaluable advice: “My counsel to pacers is simple—enjoy yourself. Every run-up, every delivery, every moment on the field should be savoured. Your hair, your shirt, your moustache—whatever makes you feel confident—embrace it and express yourself.”

He further highlighted the ethical responsibilities of fast bowlers: “Your aim should be to take wickets, not to injure anyone. I’ve had the privilege—and regret—of bowling at legends like Sachin Tendulkar. I struck his helmet and once broke his ribs. That was never my intention, and it felt wrong.”

Akhtar’s presence in Dhaka is not just inspirational but also a practical masterclass for the Capitals’ bowling unit. His mentorship promises to enhance the skills of both seasoned players like Taskin and the younger talents eager to make their mark in professional cricket.
