Vipers Dominate Capitals in Season Opener Blast!

The 2025 ILT20 season got off to a thrilling start as the Desert Vipers edged out the defending champions, Dubai Capitals, in a high-octane contest. Andries Gous’s explosive 36-ball 58 proved the cornerstone of the Vipers’ chase, complemented by Fakhar Zaman’s attacking approach at the top of the order. While the Capitals made brief interventions in the middle overs, they could not prevent the Vipers from completing a convincing four-wicket victory.

From the outset, Gous and Zaman imposed themselves on the opposition. The fourth over against left-arm pacer Muhammad Jawadullah was particularly punishing; the duo scored 21 runs, including two boundaries and two sixes, signalling the Capitals’ early struggle to contain them. Zaman followed with a six off Mohammad Nabi in the next over but fell to the spinner on the following delivery. By then, the opening pair had already added 50 runs, effectively claiming a third of the target in under five overs.

The PowerPlay concluded with the Vipers at 64 for one after six overs, thanks largely to Gous hitting three successive boundaries off Scott Currie in the final over. Post-PowerPlay, the scoring rate slowed, yet the Vipers maintained the upper hand. Gulbadin Naib dismissed Max Holden after the strategic break, while Waqar Salamkheil’s double-wicket over removed Sam Curran and Gous, briefly threatening the chase. However, the required rate remained manageable: 42 runs from 42 deliveries.

Dan Lawrence’s assertive batting and Shimron Hetmyer’s boundary further reduced the target, despite Currie dismissing Hetmyer. With 23 needed off 30 balls, the equation was firmly in favour of the Vipers. Haider Ali bowled an economical four-run over to apply pressure, yet Currie could only concede a single run in the next over before dismissing Hasan Nawaz. Khuzaima Tanveer immediately struck a boundary, and alongside Lawrence, they comfortably finished the remaining 14 runs, securing the win with four wickets in hand.

Earlier in the match, the Vipers’ bowlers had played a pivotal role. Naseem Shah, Curran, Jordon Cox, and Tanveer reduced the Capitals to 42/4 by the seventh over. David Willey’s innings of 10 runs from 22 balls ended with a dismissal by Noor Ahmad. Rovman Powell and Mohammad Nabi stitched together 34 runs off 22 balls, crossing the 100-run mark before Tanveer dismissed Powell. Nabi and Shanaka added 48 runs in the final five overs, taking the Capitals to 150, which proved insufficient.

Dubai Capitals 150/8 (20 overs) – Rovman Powell 39, Mohammad Nabi 29; Noor Ahmad 2-25, David Payne 2-26, Khuzaima Tanveer 2-35.
