Hardik Pandya Returns for South Africa T20Is; Shubman Gill Remains Unlikely Starter

India is set to welcome back Hardik Pandya for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa, offering a major boost ahead of the five-match contest beginning December 9. The allrounder marked his return to competitive cricket with a stellar performance for Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Tuesday, making him a strong inclusion for India’s T20 squad.

Hardik had been sidelined for over two months following a quadricep injury during the Asia Cup. His comeback match displayed both his fitness and impact—bowling four overs for 1 for 52 before smashing a match-winning 77*, securing Baroda’s victory over Punjab. His return comes at a crucial time, with India seeking stability and balance in the middle order.

However, the mood in the Indian camp is mixed due to uncertainty surrounding vice-captain Shubman Gill’s availability. Gill injured his neck during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, forcing him to retire hurt and subsequently miss the second Test and the current ODI series. Doctors have diagnosed the injury as a pinched nerve, recommending at least five weeks of rest.

Gill has now reported to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru to continue his recovery, but early indications suggest he is unlikely to be fit in time for the T20Is. This leaves India searching for a suitable partner for Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order. Sanju Samson, who was part of the T20I squad in Australia but had limited opportunities, could be one option. Another strong contender is Yashasvi Jaiswal, though he was not part of the recent squad.

Meanwhile, the selectors are also eyeing Riyan Parag for a potential recall after his strong domestic performances and leadership role with Assam in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

The T20I series will be played across Cuttack, New Chandigarh, Dharamsala, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad from December 9 to 19. India currently hold the No.1 ranking in T20Is, while South Africa sit at No.5, setting the stage for a competitive series. With the T20 World Cup on the horizon, both sides are expected to use the series to fine-tune their squads.

Hardik’s comeback and Gill’s uncertain status are likely to dominate discussions as selectors finalize the squad on Wednesday.
