Virat Kohli has put to rest rumours about a possible return to Test cricket, confirming that he will concentrate solely on limited-overs formats. Critics had questioned the future of India’s experienced batsmen, Kohli and Rohit Sharma, particularly following inconsistent performances. However, both players have recently delivered, with Kohli scoring a splendid century and Rohit a fifty in India’s first ODI against South Africa.
In Ranchi, India narrowly defeated South Africa by 17 runs, with Kohli’s 135-run innings earning him the player of the match award. During the post-match presentation, Kohli addressed questions about his potential Test comeback. The 37-year-old star’s return had been widely discussed due to India’s struggles in the longest format.
Contrary to hopes among supporters, Kohli dismissed any possibility of a Test return. Speaking with composure and clarity, he confirmed his intention to focus exclusively on one format. When Harsha Bhogle asked whether he would now commit only to ODIs, Kohli replied, “Yes, from now on, I will play just one format.”
Previously, Indian media speculated that the BCCI might discuss revisiting Kohli’s retirement decision after poor team performances. Nevertheless, BCCI secretary Debasish Saikia clarified that the board had not contacted Kohli regarding Test cricket.
Following his outstanding performance in the first ODI, former England captain Kevin Pietersen commented on social media about Kohli’s potential Test return. Pietersen said, “If it’s even partially true that Virat and Rohit are contemplating a Test comeback, it should be taken seriously. If the game’s biggest stars want to play again, they should be allowed to do so.”
Kohli retired from Test cricket in May this year, leaving behind a remarkable record of 123 matches, 9,239 runs, and 30 centuries at an average of 46.85. Having also stepped away from T20 internationals, Kohli’s fans now watch eagerly as he continues to excel in India’s one-day fixtures.
